Cruz-Diez at the Hayward Gallery

The Hayward Gallery will inaugurate the exhibition “Light Show”, on January 30th, where artworks from 22 different artists will be presented: David Batchelor, Carlos Cruz-Diez, Olafur Eliasson, Dan Flavin, Cela Floyer, Jenny Holzer, Ann Veronica Janssens, Anthony McCall, François Morellet, Ivan Navarro, Katie Paterson and Conrad Shawcross among others. Cliff Lauson is the curator of the Exhibition.

The theme of both artworks and installations is ‘light’, used to sculpt and give shape to space. Pieces from the 60s up to the most recent interactive environments will be displayed.

In one of the rooms, Carlos Cruz-Diez shows Chromosaturation, an environment composed of colored chambers that immerse visitors in an absolute monochromatic situation, where they will see and feel color as a sensory experience, without the help of form or of any other type of support. “The Chromosaturation is the synthesis of my work”, states Cruz-Diez.

Chromosaturation is a research that Cruz-Diez undertook in 1965 on the phenomena of color. “My first Chromosaturation was shown at the "Cinétisme, Spectacle, Environnement" exhibition, at the Maison de la Culture in Grenoble, France, in 1968”, says Cruz-Diez. The Chromosaturation that was installed in Paris at the entrance of the subway station Odéon on the Boulevard Saint-Germain, in 1969, caused excitement among the many travelers that would exit the subway station and the passerbys that saw their everyday routine being questioned, when walking through three colored chambers, immersed in red, green and blue. A few months before the artwork was installed, Odéon square was the stage of student protests during the May ‘68 riots. Cruz-Diez comments, “If the demonstrations had not happened, perhaps I would not have been allowed to exhibit art in the streets of Paris”.
At the upcoming “Light Show” exhibition, pieces from the most representative artists that work with light, that create atmospheres, interactive artworks and intangible sculptures, will be on display for visitors to experience light in all its forms.

Since its creation in 1968, the Hayward Gallery has transformed its spaces into a reference for the experimentation and innovation of art. The gallery is located at the Southbank Centre, a famous cultural complex building on the South Bank of the Thames. The Southbank Centre includes the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Purcell Room, the Hayward Gallery and the Saison Poetry Library.
